About the Lab

Tathagata Mukherjee Acting & Film Lab is a creative learning space dedicated to the art of performance, cinema, and storytelling. Founded by actor, writer, and director Tathagata Mukherjee, the Lab brings together practical training, critical thinking, and real-world industry experience.

Through its programmes in Acting, Filmmaking, Film Appreciation, and the Young Performers Lab, participants are encouraged to observe deeply, think creatively, and express themselves authentically. All classes are primarily taught by Tathagata Mukherjee, with occasional guest sessions by eminent industry professionals.

At the Lab, learning extends beyond the classroom. It is a space where conversations spark ideas, collaborations evolve into projects, and curiosity becomes the foundation for meaningful artistic practice. Guided by industry insights and hands-on experience, students are encouraged to discover new perspectives, challenge conventions, and build a lasting relationship with cinema and storytelling.

Tathagata Mukherjee is an actor, writer and filmmaker whose work spans cinema, television and theatre. Known for his distinctive storytelling and nuanced exploration of human relationships, he has established himself as one of the most versatile creative voices in contemporary Bengali cinema.

As a filmmaker, his notable works include Bhotbhoti, Pariah, Raas, Unicorn, Gopone Mod Charan and the Hindi feature film Memory X, each reflecting his interest in character-driven narratives and emotionally resonant storytelling.

Beyond filmmaking, Tathagata has spent years developing and conducting actor workshops for both emerging and established performers, shaping performances through observation, collaboration and a deep understanding of character. His work as an actor, director and mentor has allowed him to engage closely with every stage of the creative process.

Avignan Bhattacharya is a theatre and film practitioner, actor, writer, director, composer, and creative strategist with extensive experience in performance arts and storytelling. Alongside his work in theatre, he has been actively involved in independent filmmaking, direction, screenplay development, music composition, and creative production. He has collaborated with actors and artists from some of Bengal’s most respected theatre traditions and continues to explore new forms of cinematic and theatrical expression.

A core member of the theatre group Rosikata, Avignan has worked across multiple disciplines including acting, directing, production management, and music creation. Deeply passionate about cinema, performance, and emerging creative technologies, he brings a multidisciplinary vision to artistic collaboration and institution building. At the academy, he serves as the Operational Director, overseeing creative coordination, academic operations, and organizational development.

Eligibility & Admissions

Who can apply?

Tathagata Mukherjee Acting & Film Lab welcomes individuals with a passion for performance, cinema, storytelling and creative expression. Young Minds Lab and Young Minds Lab – Advanced are open to participants between 6 and 15 years of age. All other programmes are open to participants aged 15 years and above.

Is prior experience required?

Prior experience is not essential for most programmes. Curiosity, commitment, discipline and a genuine desire to learn are the only prerequisites. Admission to Advanced Programmes may require prior experience or a brief interaction with the faculty.

How is admission decided?

Admission is subject to seat availability. Limited batch sizes ensure individual attention, meaningful mentorship and a more immersive learning experience. Early registration is strongly encouraged.
